The complexity of clinical needs presented by individuals with co-occurring disorders is addressed through integrated treatment that addresses the holistic needs of the client. It is recognized the co-occurring issues needs to be seen as the expectation, rather than the exception when approaching the assessment and treatment of clients in outpatient counseling. Case management services are seen as instrumental to supporting the recovery of an individual with co-occurring issues. Treatment needs to acknowledge that clients may be at differing stages and readiness for change for their co-occurring issues and make adjustments to those differences. Treatment needs to be supportive of recovery, utilizing motivational enhancement strategies and other evidence based interventions.
