Job Description:
Army musicians perform in a variety of ensembles ranging from ceremonial band to jazz quartets to small ensembles, playing all styles of music. You may be traveling with the rock band one week and marching in a parade for thousands of people the next. While serving in the Army you’ll perform for Presidents, elected officials, senior military officers, crowded parade routes, and small solemn ceremonies. When you’re not playing or performing you’ll be perfecting your craft as a musician and a Soldier alongside of the finest men and women in the country.
Training:
Job training for an Army musician starts with nine weeks of Basic Training where drill instructors will train you in basic Soldier skills such as marksmanship, self-defense, and fitness. You'll also attend the 6-month Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, VA for private lessons and musical training in the following subjects:
- Private instrumental instruction
- Music theory
- Small Ensemble Performance
- Stage Presence
- Military History

Make the Army a career and you will attend leadership courses, receive additional musical training, attend professional development courses, and can even apply to lead the band as a Warrant Officer.
Promotions and Career Paths:
All of our musicians will enjoy a career path that offers many choices based on their strengths, preferences, and merit. Progress through musical leadership positions such as small ensemble leader culminates in becoming the enlisted bandleader or group leader for your instrumental group. At each phase of your career you will receive additional musical and leadership training through the Army’s Non-Commissioned Officers Educations System.
A few musicians are selected each year to earn a commission and conduct and lead the band. Musicians selected for this career path are from among the most talented leaders and performers and receive advanced leadership and musical training through the Warrant Officer Education System.
Duties:
Some of your duties as an Army musician may include:
- Playing in or leading bands, orchestras, combos, jazz groups or small ensembles
- Performing for ceremonies, parades, concerts, festivals and dances
- Performing all applicable styles of music
- Transposing moderately easy music
- Rehearsing and learning new music when not performing

Requirements
The Army Band Program is open to talented musicians, male or female, who are qualified to enlist in the Army and can pass a prearranged audition with an instrument of their choice. But more importantly, the program is for anyone who has a passion for his/her instrument and a love for playing and performing music. Below are a few basic requirements:
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien
- 17–41 years old
- Healthy and in good physical condition
- In good moral standing
- High School or equivalent education
- Enlistment in the U.S. Army
